Form for Session 2 Fall 2009
B.C. Legislature Tour
Wed., November 18, 2009
To Downtown by Bus
This is the second of several field trips planned this year to supplement the Governance focus of our four year thematic curriculum cycle. We will take transit to downtown Victoria and then walk the rest of the way to the Legislature Building. Once there, a free tour of the building and some of the legislative functions that occur there has been organized. The tour is scheduled for 11 am, so students choosing to attend need to be at the school and ready to leave at 10 am. After the tour there will be time for lunch and a short historical walk to some of the other nearby buildings constructed by architect Francis Rattenbury.
Students must come prepared with their lunches, water, and seasonal clothes.
Victoria Times Colonist
Wed., November 25, 2009
To Kings Rd. and Douglas St. by Foot
Older than the city of Victoria, older than the province, older than the nation itself, the seeds of a free press planted 150 years ago by a man who ended up in the madhouse have flourished and grown into a major city daily. At 11:00 am we will begin a tour of the Victoria Times Colonist newsroom, printing press, and offices. We will be learning about the various steps of producing a newspaper as well as some of the history of the free press in Victoria. Our journey back to the school will include a stpo at one of the parks en route, possibly Topaz or Summit.
Students must come prepared with their lunches, water, and seasonal clothes.
Victoria City Hall
Wed., December 2, 2009
To Downtown by Bike
This is the third of several field trips planned this year to supplement the Governance focus of our four year thematic curriculum cycle. We will cycle from the school via safe streets to within two blocks of city hall and push our bikes the remainder of the way. When there, we will be given a tour of the offices, have a discussion in the council chambers, and meet with the person responsible for sustainable development policy in Victoria. Time permitting, we will stop at the Crystal Pool playground for some active play.
Students must come prepared with their lunches, water, seasonal clothes, bikes and bike safety skills.
Mount Douglas
Wed., December 9, 2009
To Mount Douglas by Bike
This is the first of a seasonal series of three trips we will be making out to Mt. Douglas this school year. We will cycle over to Mount Douglas where we will explore select areas of the park with a focus on seasonal changes in plant and animal life cycles. A digital camera will be on hand for any students wishing to participate in creating a visual record of some of the seasonal changes observed. We will go for a hike and play some of our favorite outdoor games like Sardines or Walk of the Coyote.
