While it's still wet and somewhat cold outside we're checking out some local spots of educational interest. We will take the bus downtown and have our lunch before we explore some of the regular exhibits and galleries offered at the museum as well as the S’abadeb – The Gifts: Pacific Coast Salish Art and Artists exhibit.
We will be taking the city bus to the museum. Lunches, water and seasonal clothes are required.
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria
Wed., January 27, 2010
To the Art Gallery on Moss St. by Bike
Today, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria holds the largest public collection of art in the province. We will be touring the "Vision into Reality: The Birth of the Collection" exhibit with an informative guide and will conclude with a hands-on art activity. The Birth of the Collection explores examples from local, Canadian, and international artists working in fine and decorative art media. Highlights include a significant collection of old master prints by Rembrandt, Dürer, and Goya as well as works by other international artists such as Turner, Daumier, Rodin, and Whistler.
Students must come prepared with bikes, helmets, lunches, water, and seasonal clothes.
The Belfry Theatre
Wed., February 10, 2010
To Fernwood Square by Foot
Completed in 1887, the now named "Belfry Theatre" was originally the Spring Ridge Chapel which housed one of the first Baptist congregations to form in Victoria. Our trip to the Belfry will involve some history about the building and surrounding area as well as some insight into the operations of a theatre and what live theatre is all about. There is a drama activity planned for the end of the tour, so be sure to bring your thespian hat.
