Sample Activities
We have included here a few sample activities. They are at a variety of levels, and thus will not all be suited to your child. They will however give you an idea of what our activities will be like. You will be provided with bundles of activities based on your child's interests and learning needs. These bundles will include several activities for you and your child to choose from.

Meeting the Learning Outcomes through Activities
Each of our activities meets learning outcomes (goals) for the B.C. Ministry of Education and for Oak and Orca School. We have ensured that all the learning outcomes are met through a number of activities, so that each child can choose different different activities and still meet many of the learning outcomes. It is the role of the Oak and Orca teacher to keep track of the learning outcomes each child has accomplished and suggest ways of interesting children in areas they have not chosen on their own. We have shown here how the example activities correspond to specific learning outcomes.
Note: For the ministry learning outcomes LA means Language Arts, S means Science, SS means social studies.
Word Family Forage
Meets the following Ministry of Education outcomes:
- Predict unknown words by using picture clues, their knowledge of language patterns, and letter-sound relationships-LA
- Demonstrate an understanding of the conventions of print, including how letter sounds make words, left to right movement in reading, and spacing-LA
- Demonstrate an understanding that print conveys meaning-LA
- Identify familiar words and images in charts, lists, signs, informational texts, and storybooks-LA
- Describe the appearance and behaviour of a variety of animals-S
And the following Oak and Orca learning outcomes:
- Playing with words, rhymes, jokes, and puns, songs
- Learning from a print rich environment
- Application of phonics and other reading tools to decipher words
- Knowledge of harvest and forage cycles and food storage
Ready, Set, Go
Meets the following Ministry of Education outcomes:
- Create and interpret simple maps using cardinal directions, symbols, and simple keys-SS
- Select topics from a variety of literature and mass media works that are of personal interest-LA
- Use an expanding range of strategies - including pictorial, graphic, structural, and phonics clues - to derive meaning-LA
- Ask and respond to questions before, during, and after reading, viewing, or listening-LA
- Describe aspects of stories or mass media narratives, including characters, where and when the events took place, and what happened-LA
- Writing simple sentences-LA
- Create a variety of personal communications, including charts, journals, lists, illustrations, and stories-LA
- Offer direct responses to their reading, listening, or viewing experiences supported by reasons, examples, and details-LA
- Describe how physical environment influences human activities-SS
- Demonstrate a respect for variations in language, accent, and dialect-LA
And the following Oak and Orca Learning Outcomes
- Sense of solidarity with other people and their problems
- Empathy with and respect for other people and cultures
- Knowledge of a range of perspectives on issues

Meets the following Ministry of Education outcomes:
- Conduct simple tests and describe observations-S
- Identify patterns and groupings to draw conclusions from information-S
- Collect and record information from a variety of sources and experiences-SS
- Draw simple interpretations from personal experiences, oral sources, and visual and written representations-SS
- Formulate questions to guide observation and investigations-S
And the following Oak and Orca Learning Outcomes
- Identify some functions and characteristics of soil, rocks, water
- Careful observation
- Comparing similarities and differences
- Seeing relationships
- Making inferences from observations
Needs and Wants Bag
Meets the following Ministry of Education outcomes:
- Describe differences between individual needs and wants-SS
- Demonstrate a willingness to present relevant ideas in discussions-LA
- Identify strategies to address problems-SS
- Demonstrate a willingness to respond to questions about their own communications-LA
And the following Oak and Orca Learning Outcomes
- Share ideas and work in a respectful manner
- Distinguish quantity from quality and value
- Knowledge of the common needs of all humans and other species
- Communicate personal boundaries, needs, wants, feelings, and ideas
