Earth & Fire Week (August 30th to Sept 3rd)

Earth & Fire Week is a great way to end the summer program, offering investigations into the significance of fire in our bioregion as well as an important aspect of our ecosystem that is often overlooked, the soil. As a way to sum up what we have learned over the summer, this week will include learning about the geology and topography of the region, where earth and fire once met to create the meadows and mountains that we have been exploring.

Wednesday September 1st

Walking to the Compost Education Centre

On Tuesday, we will be walking to the Compost Education Centre, where we will be given a guided interactive tour through the vegetable garden. Students will learn about the growing conditions of various vegetables as well as get their hands dirty while learning about elements of composting. Throughout the guided tour students will be given opportunities to learn about how the plants grew in the way they have.

Thursday September 2nd

Biking to Clover Point

Our last field trip will be to Clover Point, where we will be having our end-of-summer potluck gathering. This is the last farewell to the 2010 summer program, so be sure to attend! Bring friends!

Activities & Workshops

This week we will do activities such as rock/stone identification, making dirt layer dioramas, rock mozaics and papier-machee volcano that erupt, learning about local topography, the importance of fire in our local ecosystem, and the consequences of forest fires (both positive and negative). Geologist rockstar, Duncan Johannessen, will lead a workshop on the rocky outcroppings of our neighbourhood. We will search for faults, veins, and cool textures and learn about how they were formed.
