Sound Week (July 26th to 30th)
During Sound Week, we will be exploring our natural environment as it is interpreted by our ears. Students will learn about the history, fabrication, and cultural significance of various instruments from around the world and be encouraged to listen to the sounds of nature. There will be room for creativity as the children are asked to invent instruments out of both natural and reusable materials which capture the sounds they have heard.
Tuesday July 27th
Biking to Gonzales Bay
Our first field trip will be biking to Gonzales Bay, where students can discover the assortment of sounds that can be made from beach materials such as drift wood, rocks, kelp and who knows what else!
Thursday July 29th
Potentially biking to Organized Khaos Headquarters
Organized Khaos is a skilled youth junk percussion band. A workshop learning about all the wonderful sounds that can be made from everyday 'junk' is likely to stem student's recognition of the value of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Activities & Workshops
This week we will be making instruments out of reusable materials, doing paintings or other art inspired by what we hear, making sound maps, learning about music from various cultures, where instruments come from, how they are made, and how sound travels through different mediums and eventually to our brains. We may create a song (and dance for those who would prefer) that can be presented to parents at the end of the week
